Utility
There are many reasons why a person might need to have colon surgery, but most commonly, colon surgery is performed to remove colon cancer. The type of colon surgery that is used to address colon cancer is called a colon resection.

During the operation, no matter how it is performed, the diseased segment of the colon is removed, as well as a healthy piece of colon on either side. Any nearby lymph nodes are also excised to prevent the cancer from coming back.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Essentially, a surgery that is conducted through very small slits is called laparaoscopic surgery, and there are many ways that this might be performed on the colon. This is so minimally invasive that recovery time is often accelerated and people find themselves back to normal within a few days, something that would not be an option with a more aggressive sort of surgery.

When laparoscopic is performed on the colon a few small openings are used to allow the entrance of the tools and the surgery is conducted through the use of a television monitor. Most of the incisions are no more than a quarter inch long, though one opening might be enlarged to two or three inches to finish off the surgery.

Open surgery
Traditionally, colon surgery is the performed using a method called open surgery. The patient is put under general anesthesia and an incision is made. While this is the method that has been used for sometime, most people agree that it tends to delay quick healing. However, there are times when it is considered more suitable, such as if the patient in question has problems with obesity or if the cancer is located in an area of the colon that is difficult to reach by normal means.

Pain after surgery
Due to the nature of the surgery, there is some pain management involved. While a general anesthetic is commonly used during surgery, an epidural might be administered to help control pain afterward. You will also be prescribed pain killers, but most surgeons agree that you should take them as little as possible. Remember that the sooner you can get your body back to normal functioning, the better of you will be!
